Admission Information

Admission Deadline: “Upto 01 February 2022

 

Acceptable scores at Southern Admission Test (SAT) or at least 550 in (TOEFL).New students are admitted throughout the year, for spring, summer and fall semesters. Please check for the last date of submitting application in a particular semester. All admission queries should be directed to the Admission. Application forms are available @ Tk. 500/=Only completed applications with all certificates, transcripts, mark sheets, letters of recommendation and photographs, etc. of the students will be processed.

Academic Qualifications for Admission:

1. The admission eligibility for undergraduate, graduate and Diploma level at private universities approved by UGC is determined as follows:

i)Private Universities shall not advertise admission or admission to any program or course other than the program or course approved by the University Grants Commission.

ii) A candidate must have minimum GPA 2.50 or equivalent grade in each SSC or equivalent examination and HSC examinations or equivalent examination. If there is minimum GPA 2.00 in any of these two examination, the candidate must have total GPA 6.00 in both examination.

iii) The candidate must have minimum 5 Subjects in O-Level and 2 subjects in A-Level examinations with minimum grade of B (GPA 4.00 ) in 4 subjects and  of C (GPA 3.50) in 3 subjects of 7 subjects in both the examinations.

iv) Children of the freedom fighters may apply with an aggregate GPA of 5.00 in SSC/SSC(Vocational)/Dakhil and HSC/Alim or equivalent.

v)For the programs or courses titled Music, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Graphics Design, Library Science & Information Technology, the candidate should have a minimum of GPA 2.00 in SSC/O-Level and HSC/Aor equivalent public examinations at each level.

vi) Students with a science background in SSC/SSC(Vocational)/Dakhil, HSC/Alim or equivalent examinations are only allowed to get admission in the programs/courses at the Bachelor’s (BSc), Master’s (MSc) and Diploma level under the Faculty of Science and Technology. Students who passed from Arts, Humanities and Business background are not allowed to get admission in B.Sc., MSc and Diploma programs.

vii) Students having GED Diploma degree will not be eligible for admission to the private universities.

viii) Students seeking admission to the Masters programs must have GPA 2.00 or equivalent at Bachelor program having the above mentioned educational qualifications.

2. It is, therefore, directed to admit the students in the approved programs/courses of the commission at the private universities subject to the educational qualifications mentioned above. At the same time, the commission’s office circular regarding the admission policy of the students issued on 10 April 2016 (Office Memo no.3010) has been cancelled.

We assess each applicant as an individual, by evaluating work experience, academic profile, professional and personal maturity, and patterns of success. The Admission Committee looks for individuals who will be future leaders in respective fields. Southern University is interested in students who want to learn. The university does not discriminate any individual because of age, sex, race, marital status, physical disability or religious affiliations. The office of admission reserves the right to request any additional information before a decision for admission is made. Providing false or incomplete information on the application for admission may result in a denial of admission or revocation of enrollment.

The University offers its students Scholarship/ Financial Assistance for their studies within its limited scope on the basis of Semester Result applicable from 2nd Semester onward.

Education is an investment. We support the students in making the worthy investment through our financial aid office. Assistance is available to all students who qualify at Southern University. These aids come in various forms, including local and international private scholarships, work-study programs and part-time jobs. A limited number of scholarships are available to those students who demonstrated exceptional academic achievement at their previous academic institute. You are encouraged to visit the finance/accounts office and meet with the staff to determine if you qualify for assistance. The University financial aid professionals are dedicated to develop an aid package that gives you the best chance of earning an education without overwhelming financial worries. Application for all financial aid and scholarships is included in the application for admission. The statement of financial support must accompany the application for admission.

Scholarship for academic achievement

Southern University scholarships/Tuition waiver are based solely on student’s previous academic records. The required information is supplied as part of the application for admission. The admission office uses official transcripts and official test scores to identify eligible first-time freshmen students. Students are required to have a 3.5 grade point average. Scholarships/Tuition waiver are renewable each year provided the recipient maintains a 3.5 grade point average each academic year. It is possible however to reduce the cost at University program by qualifying for academic and student scholarships. Financial aid and scholarships not cover the costing books, lab fees, exam fees, and graduation fees. Please consider the cost of Southern University before you continue with your application process. This is the student’s responsibility.

Requirements for student’s aid/scholarships
Good academic standing is determined by measuring the student’s academic performance at University and consists of the following:

  • Satisfactory academic progress- In order to meet the satisfactory academic progress requirement, the student must maintain a cumulative grade point average greater than that which would result in academic dismissal.
  • Program requirement- In order to meet the pursuit of program requirement, the student must pass a minimum number of credit hours each semester and complete all degree requirements within a specified number of semesters.
  • Consideration- Following each semester, the cumulative GPA and number of credits earned by each student are reviewed for complainer with the criteria for good academic standing. Students not receiving financial aid are subject to the same criteria and can be placed on financial aid probation or suspension for future consideration.
  • Probation- A student who fails to meet the above criteria in any semester is placed on financial aid probation. A student placed on financial aid probation may receive financial aid for the next three (3) semesters; student failing to maintain good academic standing can be placed on financial aid probation at Southern University, Bangladesh.
  • Suspension- A student is placed on financial aid suspension if the student fails to pass any credit hours or withdrawing from classes. If a student on financial aid probation does not regain good academic standing by the end of the probationary period. The student is placed on financial aid suspension. Any student who regains good academic standing and then loses it during a subsequent semester is also placed on financial aid suspension. Violation of any rule of Southern University a disqualification for enjoying scholarship/any financial aid.

Important Information: Scholarships are subject to change periodically. Each year new scholarships will be offered and some will be discontinued.

Student Employment

A part time job can be a valuable and rewarding experience. Some part-time jobs require students to demonstrate their financial need (work-study), although a job cannot be guaranteed.

Scholarship/Financial Aid Policies

Scholarship/Financial Aid will be awarded to all undergraduate and graduate students who meet the eligibility criteria*.

  • All applications for scholarship/tuition waiver must be submitted within the deadline announced by the university.
  • Only one of the waivers will be awarded to a particular student.
  • All categories of tuition fee waiver will depend on the University availability of funds.
  • Students applying for renewal of their tuition fee waiver in any category will have to take minimum 12 credit course load.

*The financial aid policy is subject to change as guided by authority.

Each semester, Southern University is proud to honor academically talented and exceptionally skilled students with a variety of scholarships and awards. The university annually awards more than 10 million taka as scholarships to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Eligibility Criteria
The process is designed to attract a high quality student body, add diversity to the student population, remove financial barriers for qualified but financially disadvantaged students and assist in meeting institutional and regulatory compliance requirements.

Scholarship/Financial Aid Policy Undergraduate Students

Scholarship/Financial Aid Policy is applicable for Undergraduate students enrolled in current semester and onward. Scholarship/financial aid will be awarded to them as per the Scholarship/Financial Aid Policy which was in place at the time of their admissions.

General Conditions applicable for all categories of scholarships:

A.1. The students are required to take 12 credit hours in all semesters.

A.2. Tuition fee waiver is not awarded on retake/repeat subject(s). The student is required to pay for the retake/repeat subject(s).

A.3. If students fail (F) in any subject (s) in a semester, s/he will not be considered for tuition fee waiver for two subsequent semesters. However s/he will be allowed to apply in the third semester with required CGPA.

A.4. Students having “I” grade in a semester will be considered for Scholarship/Financial Aid in their current semester but have to pay for all the courses. If s/he obtains the required CGPA after “make-up” or grade submission, his/her waiver will be reimbursed /adjusted in the next semester.

A.5. Students, suspended/penalized for disciplinary reasons, will not be eligible for scholarship/financial aid for the remaining academic period at Southern University (starting from the date such decision is made).

A.6. If a student is eligible for more than one category of Scholarship/Financial Aid, only the higher one will be applicable.

A.7. Waiver is not applicable in Admission Fee, IT Facility Uses Fee, Lab Fee, Residential Fee, Library Fee, and Student Activity Fee, sports fee and all other fees.

A.8. Scholarship/Financial Aid will not be provided for the non-credit courses.

A.9. Waiver is awarded to the number of credit hours assigned for completion of graduation for each program. Waiver is not awarded for additional credit hours taken by a student.

A.10. All categories of tuition fee waiver will depend on the availability of fund.

A.11. The university authority reserves the right to accept or reject the application without prior notice.

A.12. The Scholarship/Financial Aid Policy is subject to change at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.

  • Southern University awards following categories of Scholarship/Financial Aid:
  • Scholarship Based on Previous Academic Results 50% tuition fee waiver is awarded to students at the undergraduate programs of Southern from the first semester based on the following eligibility criteria.

Eligibility criteria and other requirements:

1.1 Students who obtained GPA of 5.0 (without 4th subject) in SSC and HSC or equivalent.

1.2 Students who obtained 6 “A”-s in O Level/IGCSE (in two sittings) and 2 “A”s and 1 “B” in A Level or equivalent.

1.3 A minimum CGPA of 3.50 is required to be maintained in all the semesters. If a student fails to maintain the required CGPA, s/he will not be awarded with the tuition fee waiver in the following semester until regaining the required CGPA.

  1. Scholarship Based on Southern University Admission Test Result

100% tuition fee will be waived to those students scoring the highest marks in the SOUTHERN University Admission Test.

However, if a candidate attempts a written test for more than one group then the score of that group will be considered that has the maximum examination sections.

Under any circumstances, if more than one candidate obtains equal marks in the attempted group, the highest mark for each of the examination sections will be considered. If more than one candidate obtains highest marks in each of the examination sections, the HSC/ the A Level or equivalent exam result will be considered for this purpose

Eligibility criteria and other requirement:

2.1 A minimum CGPA of 3.50 is required to be maintained in all the semesters. If a student fails to maintain the required CGPA, s/he will not be awarded with the tuition fee waiver in the following semester until regaining the required CGPA.

  1. Merit Scholarship Based on Southern Academic Results

Based on the following academic standing, the students will be awarded tuition fee waiver for the subsequent semester. The awarded scholarship will be applicable for current semester.

To get scholarship in the next semesters, the students will have to score the following CGPA in the current semester.

Eligibility criteria and other requirements:

3.1. Students need to complete at least 30 credit hours of the program. If a student fails to maintain the required CGPA, s/he will not be awarded with the tuition fee waiver in the following semester until regaining the required CGPA.

3.2. For studio courses, the students from the Architecture department will have to obtain a written approval from the Chairperson of the said department for the equivalence of course load.

  1. Sibling Scholarship/ Financial Aid

25% tuition fee waiver is awarded to one of the siblings who will enroll at SOUTHERN.

 Eligibility criteria and other requirements:

4.1.A minimum CGPA of 3.00 is required to be maintained in all the semesters. If a student fails to achieve the required CGPA, s/he will be allowed for a tuition fee waiver only for the next one semester within which s/he will have to regain the required CGPA, otherwise scholarship will be discontinued.

4.2. The other sibling who enrolled earlier has to maintain the following credit requirements:

4.2.1 If the other sibling is enrolled at the undergraduate program:

  1. a) S/he (except Pharmacy) will have to take 6 credit hours plus a non-credit English/Math course or a minimum of 9 credit hours in the first semester. The Pharmacy student will have to take 15 credit hours plus a non-credit English/Math course in the first semester.
  2. b) S/he (except Pharmacy) is required to take at least 12 credit hours in all other semesters. The Pharmacy student is required to take at least 18 credit hours in all other semesters.

OR

4.2.2 If the other sibling is enrolled at the graduate program:

  1. a) S/he will have to take a minimum of 6 credit hours in all the semesters.
  2. Southern Scholarship/ Financial Aid

Up to 100% tuition fee waiver with or without food and accommodation is awarded to economically disadvantaged students.

Eligibility criteria and other requirements:

5.1. Monthly income of parents not more than Tk.20,000/-.

5.2. Students who obtained GPA of 4.5 without 4th subject (GPA 4.0 for indigenous students) in SSC and HSC or equivalent.

5.3. Students who obtained 4 “A”s in O Level/IGCSE (in two sittings) and 1 “A” and 2 “B”s in A Level or equivalent.

5.4. A minimum CGPA of 3.00 is required to be maintained in all the semesters.

5.5. Only one of the family members will be eligible for this scholarship.

5.6. In case of SOUTHERN Scholarship, if a student fails to achieve the required CGPA, s/he will be allowed for a tuition fee waiver for the next two consecutive semesters within which s/he will have to regain the required CGPA, otherwise scholarship will be discontinued.

  1. Physically Challenged Students

The students who face difficulty to perform and has disabilities like visually impaired, hearing disorder, mobility impairments (loss of hands or feet), crippled, learning disabilities etc. may apply under this category.

Up to 100% special tuition fee waiver is awarded to physically challenged students at various rates to be determined by the Scholarship Committee on case-to-case basis.

Eligibility criteria and other requirements:

6.1. A minimum CGPA of 2.50 is required to be maintained in all the semesters. If a student fails to achieve the required CGPA, s/he will be allowed for a tuition fee waiver only for the next one semester within which s/he will have to regain the required CGPA, otherwise scholarship will be discontinued.

  1. Children of Freedom Fighter

100% tuition fee waiver is awarded to the children of Freedom Fighters.

Eligibility criteria and other requirements:

7.1. A minimum CGPA of 3.00 is required to be maintained in all the semesters. If a student fails to achieve the required CGPA, s/he will be allowed for a tuition fee waiver only for the next one semester within which s/he will have to regain the required CGPA, otherwise scholarship will be discontinued.

7.2. 3% of the newly registered students of SOUTHERNU in each semester will be nominated for tuition fee waiver. If the total number of newly registered students in this category exceeds 3%, then the awards will be based on the results of their admission test.

7.3. Students need to provide all certificates relevant to Freedom Fighters (e.g. Gazette copy, Lal Muktibarta, Shamoik Shonod, Bamus Shonod and others if applicable) along with a copy of his/her father’s NID. All applications will be verified for authenticity from the concerned Ministry website.

7.4. If students have already paid the tuition fee, the awarded amount will be adjusted after due verification.

  1. Other Scholarship/ Financial Aid

50% tuition fee waiver for a semester is applicable to one of the SOUTHERNU debaters/players/BNCC/Talent Hunt. One student in each semester from each category will be nominated by the Scholarship/ Financial Aid Committee.

Eligibility criteria and other requirement:

8.1. A minimum CGPA of 3.25 is required.

  1. Children of SOUTHERNU Regular Confirmed Employee

50% tuition fee waiver is awarded to the children of regular confirmed employee if s/he completes at least 1 (one) year of continuing service at SOUTHERNU. Maximum two children will be awarded.

Eligibility criteria and other requirement:

9.1. A minimum CGPA of 3.25 is required to be maintained in all the semesters. If a student fails to achieve the required CGPA, s/he will be allowed for a tuition fee waiver only for the next one semester within which s/he will have to regain the required CGPA, otherwise scholarship will be discontinued.

  1. Application Procedure:

C.1 Students who are eligible for Scholarship/ Tuition waiver Based on Previous Academic Results / Sibling Scholarship / SOUTHERN Scholarship / Physically Challenged Students / Children of Freedom Fighter / Debater’s Scholarship / Children of SOUTHERNU Regular Confirmed Employee will have to apply for the first time through a prescribed form which is available at the SOUTHERNU website or accounts & finance office and submit it to the Students Affairs Office (SAO), SOUTHERN University.

C.2 Those students who are eligible under Merit Scholarship Based on SOUTHERNU Academic Results and Scholarship Based on SOUTHERN University Admission Test Result are required to apply as students service form.

C.3 Those students who are already availing scholarship/financial aid are not required to apply further. If they fulfill all the conditions of scholarship, they will be awarded automatically.

C.4 If scholarship /financial aid of a student is discontinued due to any reason for more than one semester, s/he needs to re-apply through a prescribed form after fulfilling the eligibility criteria and credit requirements.

Students under the age of 18 may apply for early admission to Southern, who appeared Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) board exam or A level exam or any equivalent exam and yet to get passing grade can be qualified for provisional admission. Student must submit recommendation from proper university authority with proper documents and must fulfill admission criteria within one year. Early applicants to Southern must provide an official transcript of all high school work and test scores from Southern Admission Test (SAT). The results of these tests, along with the high school record, will be used to determine the applicant??s eligibility for admission.

All international students must submit a certified letter of support from the sponsors. Students must submit application two months before the semester begins.

Acceptance of Transfer Credit

Each degree program has a minimum academic content specified in semester credit hours. Course credits with a grade of ‘C’ or better earned at other recognized colleges or universities may be transferred into University degree programs subject to acceptance by the admissions office. Quarter-hour credits from other institutions are converted into semester-hour equivalent credits as follows: 1-semester credit equals 1.5-quarter credits. A minimum of 45 semester hours (of which at least 30 hours must be upper division courses) must be successfully completed from University to earn a Bachelor degree. Not more than twelve (12) semester-hours can be transferred from other institution to earn a Masters degree.

Transfer for Degree

Transfer students seeking admission to University must have a minimu5 2.0-grade point average from a recognized institution of higher education and must have been in good standing from the institution last attended. In addition, applicants must fulfill and submit the admission requirements of University. All transcripts become the property of Southern University and are not returnable. Transferred students who were denied before admission may re-apply after taking additional courses that raise their overall GPA to above a 2.5.

Credit Evaluations

An official evaluation of transferred credit is made as quickly as possible after you are admitted to a program. The Admissions Office will help you with an unofficial transcript review at your request. If a course taken at another institution is not offered at SOUTHERN, elective credit may be granted for that course. Elective credits may be applied toward degree requirements but may not be used to satisfy any specific course requirement. Grades less than C- will not transfer. The Registrar’s Office completes transferred credit evaluations. The application for course exemption and credit transfer by a newly enrolled student into a program may be submitted to the head of a concerned department and the decision of the dean will be final.

The services advance the balanced growth and development of the young, foster a culture of caring and positive interaction in the community, and ensure equal learning opportunities. With the help of student welfare, Southern aims to identify learning difficulties and other issues early on and intervene in time. Student welfare aims to create a safe and healthy learning and working environment. Student welfare looks after students. It is something each and every staff member at Southern University does as part of their everyday duties, but different staff members have different roles.

Objectives:

  • Arranging scholarship for the faculty members in the foreign universities.
  • Providing financial assistance and scholarship for the meritorious and poor students.
  • Arranging training programs to develop the morality of the students.
  • Assisting students on choosing career and job placement.

The office basically works for the development of the students. At present, twenty-six (26) regular faculty members of various departments are pursuing their higher education in various reputed universities of different countries. Among them, some are enjoying full scholarship and some partial financial assistance. They are committed to serving this University after their completion of higher education.

The function and programs of Student Welfare:

Special academic support

The aim of special academic support is to help students meet the general basic education objectives by providing them the support they need. To meet this aim, we tailor education to the students’ needs. We support the students’ learning in their own classroom by offering individual instruction, small group teaching, or classroom co-teaching. Special needs education targets the following areas:

Providing consultation; students’ who have difficulties with reading and writing, in mathematics, languages and other subjects, to promote emotional and social skills, students with learning difficulties, study and social skills, confidence, and motivation, and aims to address students’ special needs as early as possible.

Scholarship

Student welfare provides scholarships to the limited students of various categories per month every semester. The eligibility of getting the scholarship is measured by the morality and practice in the real life of the student. Besides, the minimum GPA of winning the scholarship is 3.75. If the scholarship receiver students fail to maintain the desired GPA the scholarship would be withdrawn. The scholarship is primarily given for one year. The list of the scholarship receiver is renewed/altered according to the result every semester.

Foreign Scholarship

The office is continuing its efforts to create opportunities for higher education in reputed universities for the meritorious and ideal students of Southern University. Southern send the best students of the postgraduate level to abroad for pursuing higher studies each year. It should be noted that Southern aims to appoint some of them as faculty members considering their academic excellence as well as the commitment to the community.

Financial Assistance

The financial assistance is given as follows :

  • Considering the problem and academic performance of an individual student.
  • Exemption of full tuition fee for the students in the Merit List of the Board. (who hold A+ at SSC & H.S.C. or Alim level).
  • Exemption of full tuition fee for the student obtaining GPA of 4.00 in the semester final examination.
  • Exemption of 25% to 50% tuition fee for obtaining GPA 3.90-3.99 in the semester final examination.
  • Exemption of half the tuition fee for two students from the same family (same parents).

Application is called prior to the Mid-term examinations. Eligibility to Apply for Financial Assistance and certain rules:

a) Only the enrolled students should apply for financial assistance.

b) After successful completion of the first semester, students can apply.

c) The diploma program and Executive will not be entertained.

e) Students must have a 3.00 CGPA to apply for financial assistance.

Career planning & Job Placement Unit:

Career planning & job placement unit to help the students getting jobs in the competitive job market. The function and responsibilities of the job placement unit may be summarized in the following ways :

  • To provide group and individual counseling.
  • To assist students in choosing career and job placement.
  • To take necessary steps with the industrial sector.
  • Keep close contact with prospective companies.
  • Preserve the C.V. of the graduates and other information.
  • Arranging job fair.
  • Arranging mock interviews to make the students fit for the real one.
  • Advice and assist students to solve their problems.

Psychiatric therapy

Psychiatric therapy aims to support the study and general wellbeing of students through psychological methods. The university psychologist is available to meet students and parents for consultation and counseling. The university psychologist collaborates with teachers and other staff members and conducts psychological tests, interviews, and observations if necessary.

The Psychologists may be consulted in issues involving studying, emotional life, relationships, or life changes. Students can freely contact the psychologist, preferably when the issue is still minor. Guardians can also contact the psychologist if they are worried about their children or want to discuss matters that relate to their child’s life.

Health services

Southern health services support the growth and development of the young and promote healthy and safe methods of doing academic work. The services include providing health education, monitoring and assessing the health of southern students, and if necessary, directing students to further examinations. Southern also provides first aid to anyone injured or suddenly taken ill at the campus. Please note that actual medical treatment is not included in University health services.
